Performances by: Syracuse Symphony, NY; North Carolina Symphony, Raleigh, NC;
Fort Wayne Philharmonic, IN;
Charlotte Symphony, NC; Canton Symphony, OH
Orchestra selections include:
How Birds Came Into The World
An old Cherokee legend from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
This story makes several references to things in nature: wind and rain,
thunder and lightning and, of course, birds, played by the woodwinds. 4 min.
Tailybone
From the Southern Appalachian Mountains, this has all the ingredients of
a great scary story: A cold, dark, windy night; an old man alone in his
cabin in the woods and a "creature" that comes up through the floor. 8 min.
The Whirlwind
An African-American folktale. Led by the clever Rabbit, the animals of
the forest get together to create the sounds of a whirlwind to outsmart
the mean old Mountain Lion. In the process they discover "rhythm." As
each group of animals adds its own rhythmic pattern, the instruments of
the orchestra join in to create their own musical whirlwind. The audience
gets to participate, too. 10 min.
Listen to the
closing section.
The Riddle of the Drum
This South American tale blends humor with Latin American rhythms and
concludes with a surprise "percussion" ending. 6 min.
The Nixie of the Pond
A classic fairytale from the Brothers Grimm, complete with an evil
spell, a magic flute, a magic spinning wheel, young lovers who are
changed into a frog and a toad, but live happily ever after.
The music tells the story with a love theme, a curse theme, the
hunter's theme, and a sad but beautiful song played on the flute. 16 min.
Instrumentation: picc-2-2-3-2/ 4-2-3-1/ tmp/ 3 perc/hp/ str.
Listen to the
opening section
and closing section.
